  1. Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven or soup pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the sweet potatoes, bell pepper, and onion. Cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender.
  3. Stir in the garlic, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, and chipotle chili powder. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the cocoa powder, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, broth, and black beans and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Ladle into bowls and garnish with cilantro, fresh lime juice, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and green onions, if desired.

Notes
